What Is Oral Sedation?
At Yorktowne Dental Group, dentists use several forms of sedation to help patients receive the care they need. One of the most common is oral sedation. This form of conscious sedation uses a prescribed pill taken about an hour before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed.
With oral sedation, you remain awake but drowsy, able to respond to your dentist while feeling at ease. Some patients even fall lightly asleep during treatment, which is why it’s often referred to as sleep dentistry.
At Yorktowne Dental Group, our experienced dental team provides safe and personalized oral sedation options designed to reduce anxiety, improve comfort, and help you receive the care you need with confidence.

Benefits of Oral Sedation
- Reduces dental anxiety and fear.
- Promotes deep relaxation during treatment.
- Makes longer procedures feel shorter.
- Helps patients with sensitive gag reflex.
- Little to no memory of the procedure for some patients.
What to Expect
Consultation and Evaluation
Your dentist will review your medical history, medications, and treatment needs to determine if oral sedation is right for you.
Before and During Treatment
You’ll receive a prescription with instructions to take before your visit. Since the medication can cause drowsiness, a responsible adult must drive you to and from your appointment.
After Treatment
You may feel drowsy for a few hours, so rest is recommended. A responsible adult should stay with you as advised, and follow-up care will be arranged if needed.
Aftercare Instructions
- Rest for the remainder of the day.
- Do not drive or operate machinery.
- Avoid alcohol or heavy meals immediately after.
- Follow all instructions provided by your dentist.
